The Lights in the Sky Will Shine for Me

She wanted to go to Texas, to get out of the honkytonk of her mind and dance with the men her mother warned her about. The glowing departure board’s information about Austin – three flights in the near future, all on time – was far more interesting than anything it had to say about Minneapolis.

She had never been to Texas and knew, for all her faded boot wishes and cowboy dreams, that if she made it, it would fall short of the image she created for herself, the thing she yearned for. But the same could be said for Minnesota. At the other end of that flight was what? A half-sister she’d never met, twelve years older, clad in earnest knitwear. All they had between them was secrets and the unspoken fact that their mother had told each daughter she loved her best and that was why.

She had a sneaking suspicion she wasn’t pretty enough for Texas, that her hair would never be big enough in the right way. But with bar light and a few drinks, someone could find her just right for the night. That would be enough. If her life was going to be a country song, she’d rather stumble into a burning ring instead of a sea of heartbreak.

She looked up at the departure board and then over to row of kiosks and their eager screens, standing by to dispense a boarding pass. Three credit cards in her wallet and an open ticket counter straight ahead, and so much for history.
